Baby Alfa Romeo SUV To Be Called The Milano

Downshift

Alfa Romeo has announced the name of its new junior SUV: the Alfa Romeo Milano. This new subcompact model will be revealed in April 2024, but leaked patent documents and digital wizardry from Masera have given us an early look at what the model will look like (above).

The Alfa Romeo Milano will slot into the Italian automaker’s lineup beneath the Tonale and Stelvio, as an effective replacement for the now-defunct MiTo hatchback, and will be the first series-production electric vehicle (EV) from Alfa Romeo, following the limited edition 33 Stradale last year. But it won’t be solely electric, and will also be available in combustion form.

Alfa Romeo Milano Technical Details

Technical details haven’t been made public, but we know the Milano will share its CMP/eCMP platform with the Peugeot 2008, Opel Mokka, and Jeep Avenger. The Avenger, which will be the closest mechanical relative, packs a 5kWh battery in the electric model, and a 115kW electric motor capable of a 400km driving range on the WLTP cycle. Additionally, the Avenger, and in turn the Milano, can be specced with a 1.2-liter turbo three-cylinder engine from Citroen with 115kW and 240Nm of torque.

The Milano name was chosen as a nod to the brand’s history and home in the Italian city of Milan, which has always been represented in the Alfa Romeo logo by the cross (the symbol of the Milanese capital of Lombardy) and the Biscione serpent (an iconic emblem of the city hailing from the coat of arms of the noble Visconti family).

The Alfa Romeo Milano is expected to make its way to South Africa, although likely only in 2025. When it does, it will present stiff competition, in electric form at least, to the Volvo EX30, the first units of which are already bound for South African shores.
